Gary Hodgson is a professional photographer specialising in wildlife & mountains.I run Wildlife and Landscape Photography ScotlandThank you for looking at my website. Gary has lived in the small town of Aviemore, in Scotland, for the last 15 years. Aviemore is on the northern side of the magnificent Cairngorms. I have also lived in many other locations including Torridon, Ullapool, Skye and the Isle of Mull.
Gary began his photography 'journey' over 30 years ago, well before digital cameras came along. I started off with more basic equipment and shot with mostly transparencies (slides). This is where I honed my craft. Before digital technology you had to get it right 'in the camera'.
I moved up to the Scottish Highlands over 30 years ago, to be close to the mountains. I've had a career in guiding groups of people in our mountains for nearly half my life. It sounds very cliched but I really do live and breathe in the mountains! Photography and mountains go hand in hand for me. Capturing countless special moments on film over decades. A big part of being in the hills is the encounters with so many special species of wildlife which make their home in this harsh environment. I am fascinated how these animals survive and cope in all kinds of weather that the Scottish mountains are renowned for. Obtaining that special image on camera is only part of the story. The landscape, environment and weather all combine to appreciate this wonderful place that wildlife call their home.
In the last 15 years I have been running wildlife photography days out and longer, multi day holidays. This now makes up a big proportion of my work.
The Cairngorms National Park has some of the most diverse and unique wildlife in the British Isles There are many species that can only be found in the Cairngorms. The Ptarmigan and Mountain Hare are my two favourite subjects to photograph. I regularly guide workshops in summer and winter to capture these beautiful and special animals. Going out with a local guide who knows specifically where any particular wildlife lives optimises your chance to capture some amazing images for yourself.
I also run my own mountain guiding company,
Tarmachan Mountaineering. For almost 30 years I have been guiding and instructing groups of all ages and abilities in the mountains of Scotland and further afield.
I am a fully qualified
Mountain Leader in summer & winter. You can be assured of a safe time on all of my workshops that I run high up on the mountains.
