The Isle of Mull is one of the finest places in the British Isles to see and photograph a wealth of amazing wildlife. Gary knows this beautiful Hebridean Island very well. He had lived in Tobermory (the main town on Mull) for 3 years, exploring the beautiful landscape and amazing wildlife. Join me on my 6 day wildlife photography holiday ( 5 full days of guiding and wildlife photography).
Our group sizes are small and limited to just 4 people. These holidays will book very quickly.
Arrival Day
Your holiday on Mull starts mid afternoon when we meet you at Craignure ferry terminal. Craignure is where the main ferry to from Oban arrives. It's then just a short drive (approx 30 minutes) to your luxury accommodation for 6 nights. All guests will have their own rooms, no single supplements. There is 2 x single rooms and a twin bedded room for 1 x couple (or 2 friends). Accommodation is in a wonderful lodge in a tranquil spot well located to wildlife locations.
Once you've settled in and after tea/coffee & cake we can take a late afternoon short walk for some wildlife watching and photography close to our lodge.
Day 2
Otters
It is said that Mull is the best place to see Otters in the UK. This is true, but like any wildlife you have to put some work in. Otters are relatively shy creatures. This is where fieldcraft and patience once again play a big part. Knowing where Otters usually hang out is also good knowledge. Time of day can be important too, especially with regards to the tides. Otters will more often than not be seen amongst the kelp and seaweed. They can be seen near ferry piers and walls too! Of course luck can be mixed into the equation. We will have a full day devoted to the otter, at various locations.
Day 3
Sea Eagles
The White Tailed Sea Eagle is one of those big success stories of wildlife after their reintroduction in the early 1950's. The Isle of Mull and it's nearby islands offer the best opportunity to see these magnificent birds of prey.
To get close up and personal we will be taking a private charter boat to photograph the White Tailed Sea Eagle. The tides on the particular day determine what time we set off. You will never get a better opportunity to get this close.
This beautiful boat ride will only be for our group so plenty of space to get those special images of these stunning birds.
Depending on the tides and weather conditions the remainder of the day will be spent searching for otters, sea & golden eagles plus anything else we may encounter.
Day 4
Puffins
We will take another boat journey this morning to the beautiful Isle of Lunga where (in my opinion) the finest place in the British Isles to see and photograph the adorable and charismatic Atlantic Puffin. It is an hour long journey over to the wee island of Lunga which forms part of the Treshnish Isles. We have 3 hours on Lunga. There are also Razorbills, Shags &Guillemots on these isles so if you can tear yourself away from the puffins for a bit it is worth exploring and photographing other birds nearby. If we are lucky we may see Common Seals and Dolphins on our journey to and from Lunga.
In the afternoon we will have time to seek out Otters and birds of prey when back on Mull before heading to dinner.
Day 5
Dolphins & Whale cruise
Another boat trip, today we are on the look out for Dolphins and Whales. We head out to sea again with great chances to encounter minke whales, basking sharks, common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, harbour porpoise, seals, white-tailed eagles and an abundance of seabirds.
Day 6
Full wildlife tour of the island
Our final full day on the island will be a full tour of Mull, visiting many places as we travel around in our luxury mini bus which has plenty of space. This is another great day to see and photograph otter, if you've not already had enough! We also aim to photograph the beautiful White Tailed Sea Eagle from land, maybe even Golden Eagle. Other species that we hope to see are Red Deer, Corncrake, Hen Harrier. And anything else as we explore the coastline, lochs and inland areas.
